It's September now. On Thisby, that means the weather would be going cold but today the sun beats down on us, bright and hot. Dove seems happy, so I roll up my sleeves and take through the countryside in widening circles, working her up to an easy canter. Her continued pampering seems to have done her good here in Darrow; her coat is bright and shiny and her gait is perky, playful even.
Her health is good and I don't care that I'm having to work hard to make ends meet to keep us both in grain because she's getting better care than I could ever have given her.
There's not much countryside within Darrow's invisible boundaries and I don't think I can take her through the city without consequences for everyone involved. So today I'm winding her over to the forested parts of Darrow. The paths there are intermittent but I'm sure she's up to the challenge.

Villa Cordova reminds me of the Malvern Yard. When I'd crossed its threshold, I'd immediately fallen in love with the scent of fresh hay, overturned earth, and horses. In this strange city, that scent is pure and familiar and I feel a thousand times safer. The cost to board Dove is a dear one and I'll need to find work soon, but I'm not sure I've ever seen her look so happy. Her stall is a little bigger than the lean-to and more sturdily built and the cost of her stall includes the nice hay, oats, and even some mash now and then and I can take her out as I please.
I've just brought her back in for a run now. She's been curried and pampered and her stall's been cleaned but I can't help but linger. I miss being able to hear her through my bedroom window on quiet nights and it comforts me to stay. I think it makes her happier too.
As I'm turning, I catch a flash of a red coat and my heart leaps. I have only ever seen one horse of that shade and I don't stop to think. I call out, "Corr!"

Jul. 6th, 2016 11:20 pmIt costs a lot of money to maintain a horse in Darrow, more than I expected. I thought it was hard on Thisby but at least no one was charging us on her lean-to. The money that comes each month isn't enough to pay for my apartment and Dove's stall at Villa Cordova. That's without her food, the costs of her veterinary care, or the new shoes the farrier put on her. No one cares here that she's the first normal horse to win the Scorpio Races.
People talk of things arriving from home sometimes and in the back of my mind, I can think of any number of things that I'd like to see arrive but the Races' purse is most prominent in my thoughts.
Until then, I work. I've sold some painted plates and teapots at the cat cafe but not enough. Computers, mysterious as they are to me, seem a requirement to getting real paid work around here, so I'm bound for the library with mine in my bag. Hopefully someplace quiet will help.
